Should You Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner?

By March 26, 2020January 25th, 2021No Comments

Not everyone finds it easy to decide whether to replace or repair their air conditioning system. New systems are expensive, and repairing them also doesn’t come cheap. As such, it is a genuine concern that not so many people have a clear understanding in what cases they should repair their air conditioners and when they should just buy a new one.  If you have an air conditioner, breakdowns are bound to happen. If you are faced with such a dilemma currently, read below to know the considerations you need to make to help you determine whether you are calling on air conditioning repair services or heading to the stores to shop for a new unit.

The age of the air conditioner

The lifetime of most air conditioning units is between ten and fifteen years. Some models may be total wrecks when they reach their first decade, while others may have the strength to push up to their fifteenth year. If your unit keeps on breaking down and it is past its tenth year, a repair may not be a viable option, and it may be a good idea if you started thinking about getting a new one. If, after the tenth year it is still going strong with minimal breakdowns, then you may want to hold on for a little while, but you must ensure that you don’t use it past the fifteenth year after the date of purchase.

The frequency of breakdowns

Samsung appliance repair for air conditioners don’t come cheap, and this is not something you want to be doing every now and then. If your unit keeps on breaking every now and then, even if you have used it for less than ten years, then a replacement may be necessary. There is no need to hold onto an air conditioner that keeps on siphoning more funds from you when you can get better models that will not require constant repairs and maintenance.

The efficiency of the unit

The cost of energy is another huge consideration you need to make when deciding to repair or replace your air conditioning unit. If you purchased your unit several years ago, it is likely that it is less energy efficient compared to the current models. However, this is not a reason enough for you to replace it with a modern version. If, however, you notice that you are starting to spend a lot on your energy bills, and upon an energy audit, then it may be time to replace it. Also, keep in mind that the efficiency of the unit may be affected by constant breakdowns, leading to constant repairs and maintenance. If after the repairs you still notice that your energy costs are high, then it won’t hurt if you consider getting a new unit.

Expensive repairs

Just like with other home appliances, you might be faced with a repair whose cost may be close to the cost of a new air conditioner. If you are in such a situation and you aren’t covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, it may make more sense to buy a new air conditioner than make the expensive repair. You may need to add a little bit of money to meet the cost of a new one, but it will be totally worth it in the long run. Therefore, don’t struggle with spending a lot of money on repairs when you can add a little money for a complete new Samsung air conditioning installation.

The comfort levels in the home

There are instances when your current system may fail to meet the cooling and heating needs of your home. This may be because it is getting old or it was sized incorrectly. In such cases, repairs or modifications may not be effective simply because the systems are not suited to serve your home. The best route would be to get a system that has been specifically designed for your home’s capacity. But before you take such a step, however, check your ductwork to ensure that they are not contributing to part of the system’s inabilities.

How far are you from retirement?

It is not funny to call for air conditioning repair services when you are in retirement. To begin with, all you need at that point in your life is peace of mind and not worrying about the hot summer nights because of a broken air conditioner. Also, air conditioners are relatively expensive and these are not the kinds of expenses you want to incur when you are in retirement. Therefore, if you are far away from retirement, then you may have the pleasure of not replacing your air conditioning unit. However, if you are headed for retirement or your unit will be hitting its sunset years by the time you will be retiring, then be wise enough to make plans to buy a new one before.

The above factors should be enough of a guide to help you make up your mind on whether to buy a new unit or go for repairs and maintenance. In some cases, you may wish to change your unit simply because you don’t like your current model. If you feel you can afford to do that, then you should go for it. After all, all you need is an efficient system and if your pocket can comfortably accommodate it, then there shouldn’t be any problems in getting a new unit.
