When the winter comes knocking, it is when you need your furnace the most. It goes without saying that this is also the worst time to realize that your furnace isn’t working properly. So then, what are the top furnace repair problems you should know about so that you are not caught off-guard?

Total lack of heat

If your furnace isn’t producing any heat at all, then this is a classic indication of a breakdown. It could happen abruptly or the furnace could be reducing the amount of heat it produces over time. This can be very frustrating if it is snowing outside. There are a number of reasons why your furnace may fail to produce any heat at all, and these include pilot light malfunction, faulty wiring and power failure, amongst others. If you can’t figure out what the problem is, you should call a furnace repair technician for immediate help.

Insufficient heating

When the furnace is on, but you don’t feel any change in the room temperature, then the problem could be that the furnace is producing insufficient heat. A variety of reasons may be responsible for this, but the first place you should check is the furnace thermostat. In most cases, replacing the thermostat battery could end the problem, but if this doesn’t work, then it would be in order for you to call for a professional to come and have a look at it.

Short Cycling

This refers to clicking on and off of the furnace within short durations instead of in stable and more consistent time intervals. Short cycling is usually a complicated issue and may be a pointer to a potential breakdown. Many factors could be responsible, including clogged filters, which end up restricting the air flow in the unit. If you notice this problem, you should switch off the furnace and call for repair services immediately.
