It’s always good to think about appliance repair or replacements, when you feel it’s needed. But you don’t have to wait until your appliance breaks down to act, if there is a genuine need to do so. Just like with every other appliance at home, your furnace will send you subtle signals about a potential breakdown and it is imperative for you to take them seriously and action the necessary measures.

If you ignore them, then you may not just have to settle for an appliance repair once it goes down, but you may face the possibility of replacing the entire unit, in the event that it was a serious problem. Here are some of the clear warning signs you should never ignore from your furnace:

Odors and noises

If you have been staying in your home for a while, you will be able to differentiate the natural odors and sounds from the abnormal ones. One of the initial indicators that there may be something wrong with your furnace, is the presence of a strong odor or noise. Such signs should never be ignored and you need to contact your appliance repair company as soon as you notice that something is amiss.

If your furnace is on the mature side

You should always be keen if your furnace is already a few years old. A furnace is termed mature when it has been active for 10 years or more, and at such times they are usually prone to various problems. This is due to the fact that they will be taking a heavy beating from the effects of wear and tear and may also be prone to breaking down without any significant warning. It is thus imperative for you as the owner to be very vigilant and take note of any minor issues with the unit.

Presence of a yellow flame

When you notice the furnace giving out a yellow flame, then this is an outright indication that something is grossly wrong with it. A well functioning furnace should have a pure and blue flame and it should have a constant and stable glow. Any other flame color is an indication of the presence of debris in the burner and this is something you don’t want to entertain even for a single minute. When this happens, pick up your phone and call your appliance repair team immediately.

Furnace shutting off often

A good working furnace should never take a long time to turn on or shut off as it pleases. Constant shutting off is common in older furnaces compared to the new ones and this is because of the equipment’s age. If, however, you have a relatively new one and you notice that it shuts off more than necessary, then it is advisable for you to call your HVAC experts to come and have a look at it.

These are some of the prominent issues your furnace might have to signify a pending breakdown. You should always address them immediately as they occur. Failure to do so may cause you a great deal of discomfort when the furnace suddenly refuses to work in the middle of a winter storm.
