Appliances are never designed to last forever. Occasionally, they will break down and you will have to call appliance repair technicians to come and fix them. However, there are certain instances when you may be torn between replacing and buying a new appliance.

But for you to make the right decision, it is vital to know when it is time to replace or repair the appliance, and given below are some insights to guide you in making this decision:

Constant breakdowns

When you have an appliance that keeps on breaking down every now and then, calling for appliance repair services may not be the best solution. Consider the date you purchased the appliance as well as its operational lifespan and in case this has been exceeded, it would probably be a good time to replace the whole unit. More repairs will end up gobbling up cash for no reason.

Is the appliance less than 2 years old?

Most appliances usually have one or two years of factory warranty periods, and should you observe that it is developing lots of problems when this period is not yet over, you shouldn’t waste your time with costly appliance repair. Instead, simply fill up the claims form for a replacement or repair by the manufacturer at no extra cost on your part.

Is repair cost more than 50% of the appliance value?

In case of a breakdown, and following evaluation by the appliance repair technician you discover that the cost of repairing the appliance will be more than 50% of the value of the appliance, the most prudent thing to do would be to consider acquiring a new one. At this point, the cost of repair is already too high and it would be more economical to invest in an upgrade or a new one that will not be prone to breakdown, thus exposing you to costly repairs. Although, some argue that more recent appliances that are being produced, contain materials of lower quality that are more likely to require repair and replacement.
